Using Server Manager 2012 R2 / 8.1 to Manage 2008 R2

If you use Server Manager on 2012 R2 /or 8.1 you may have noticed the following message displays in Server Manager when attempting to manage a 2008 R2 SP1 Server:

Online-Verify WinRM 3.0 service installed, running, and required firewall ports are open

This issue can be corrected by following these steps.

  1. Install Windows Management Framework 3.x
  2. Install .NET Framework 4.x
  3. Check your firewall settings if you use Windows Firewall
  4. Run winrm qc from PowerShell or cmd prompt

winrmqc

I used PowerShell 2.0 because this was done on an Exchange 2010 Server which only supported PowerShell 2.0 at the time. However, since the release of  SP3 for Exchange 2010, installing both 2.0 and 3.0 is now supported.

Once you run winrm qc you will happy that you are able to manage the 2008 R2 server via the new version of Server Manager!
